Maribor was first mentioned as a castle in 1164, as a settlement in 1209, and as a city in 1254.
Maribor was under Habsburg rule until 1918, when Rudolf Maister and his men secured the city for the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, which then joined the Kingdom of Serbia to form the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
In 1991 Maribor became part of independent Slovenia.
The city center of Maribor displays gorgeous period buildings and churches connected by a majestic pedestrian zone. Well worth a stroll.
Maribor was selected European Capital of Culture for 2012.

VARIETIES MARIBOR REGION IS FAMOUS FOR
RIESLING - WHITE The Maribor area is famous for its noble, extremely aromatic white wines: its Laski Rizling ages particularly well, and its Renski Rizling, although not dominant in the area's vineyards, is the pinnacle of Maribor wines. Some 60% of all prize wines are produced by the vignerons of this area. Connoisseurs particularly treasure the late harvest Renski Rizling from Piramida, a site on the outskirts of the city of Maribor. Steely and minerally with lovely herbal and citrus overtones, it's everything you'd want in a summer Riesling. It's the perfect wine with sushi and sashimi or Italian crudos, and is delicious with grilled salmon or other fish. The classic Rieslings of Maribor are distinguished by its peach bouquet and mineralization.
Recognizable as Riesling “M”, the Maribor-Pekel area is harmoniously revealed in a deep, dark mineral touch while showing multi-layered aromas of juicy stone fruit and fine flower honey. Very complex on the palate with the freshness and profundity of its good tension and long-lasting.
Other successful white wines of the area include SIPON, rich in acids; the fragrant CHARDONNAY and BELI PINOT a characteristic Sauvignon with its powerful "elder blossom" bouquet; Sivi Pinot - Rulandec, a full-bodied, balanced, and complex wine; Rumeni Muskat with its overpowering aroma; and of course, the, gentle, sweet, and aromatic Traminec.

THE OLD VINE HOUSE IN MARIBOR
On the banks of the River Drava, out front of the Old Vine House grows the grand Old Vine, the oldest vine in the world which is over 400 years old and registered also in the Guinness Book of Records.
The Old Vine (Stara trta in Slovenian) is the oldest living example of a noble vine on our planet. The oldest visual records of the house on Vojasniska Street 8 with the old vine are from 1657. The old Vine House is a temple of wine tradition and culture for Maribor

AMAZING SPORTS ON THE HOTEL DOORSTEPS
The hotel is DIRECTLY located on the SKI SLOPES of Pohorje Mountain.
Pohorje is the largest winter resort in Slovenia. There are about 42 km (26 miles) of north-facing ski slopes, 27 km of cross-country skiing, and 8 km of night skiing. It is best known for its "Golden Fox" competition, women's World Cup races in giant slalom and slalom.
There are 20 different ski lifts, the most famous of which is the Base Pohorje located only 100m from the hotel.
In the Summer Pohorje Maribor is a MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK with its famous Down-hill track.

SLOVENIA TOURISM FACTS
In 2019 Slovenia recorded 6.2 milion tourist arrivals and 15.7 overnight stays, which is 5 % more arrivals and 0,5 % more overnight stays than in 2018. Foreign tourists generated more than 11 million overnight stays (72 % share of all) and 4.7 million arrivals (75.5 % share of arrivals), that is 1.7 % more overnight stays and 6.3 % more arrivals than foreign tourists created in 2018. Domestic tourists generated 4.4 million overnight stays and 1.5 million arrivals, which i22.5 % less overnight stays and 1.3 % more arrivals than in 2018.
In 2017, the GDP related to tourism amounted to EUR 2.3 billion, or 5.3% of total GDP. Considering the direct and indirect impacts, tourism contribution to the GDP is estimated to be EUR 3.6 billion, that is approximately 8.4% of total GDP. In 2018, tourism exports amounted to EUR 2.7 billion, creating a tourism balance of payments surplus of EUR 1.7 billion. In 2018, tourism industries employed 68 150 people and directly accounted for 7.7% of total employment in the country. Travel exports accounted for 34.0% of total service exports in 2018.
Inbound tourists amounted to 4.4 million in 2018, up 10.9% from the previous year. Overnight stays for international tourists in all accommodation categories totalled 11.2 million in 2018, an increase of 15.4% over 2017. Core markets included Italy (13.5% of all inbound overnight visitors), Germany (11.4%), Austria (8.6%), Croatia (4.9%), the Netherlands (4.2%), the United Kingdom (3.7%), and Serbia (3.1%). The Netherlands and Germany, experienced year on year growth of 22.7% and 15.9% respectively. In 2018, domestic trips totalled 10.9 million, of which 2 million (18.3%) were overnight stays, and 8.9 million (81.7%) same-day visits. The total number of overnights in all accommodation was 5.4 million, an increase of 11.1% from 2017.
During the last quarter of a century, Slovenian tourism took great strides with regard to development and promotion, and evolved and grew at an above-average pace. Currently, it contributes no less than 12.8% of GDP, and accounted for 37.6% of the export of services and 7.5% of total exports in 2015. In 2015, a record was broken: for the first time since Slovenia declared independence, overnight stays exceeded 10 million and €2.2 billion was generated by exporting travel services.
